I want my son to have dreadlocks, how do I create them? He has thick, wavy, shoulder length hair.?

Sounds like the wrong kind of hair to me!

I would go to a hairdresser for that if you want good, professional dreadlocks.

PS: No offence, but why would you want your son to have dreadlocks? 45% of americans find the look to be "dirty" or "unclean"....so just a tip for you.

simple. dont do ANYTHING. let his hair get dirty and then rat parts from the end to the root daily.

First section the hair into squares. Square sections make round dreads. Between 1" and 2" squares works well for most people. Smaller sections make thinner dreads. The sections can be secured temporarily with rubberbands. After the hair is sectioned use a dread comb to comb the hair backwards. Start close to the scalp, not more than an inch away. Comb repeatedly towards the scalp. Eventually hair will start to pack up at the roots. It is not necessary to twist the hair. It is helpful however to roll the hair you are holding between your fingers a little while you are backcombing. Continue backcombing, slowly working towards the ends of the hair, making the dread as tight as possible as you go. When you reach the ends you can secure the dread with a rubberband. Another rubberband on the roots will help the dread stay tight at its base. The rubberbands can be removed after the dread has a chance to mature. After the rubberbands are applied to each dread the dreads should be waxed with a dread wax that does not contain petroleum. A good dread wax will tame loose hairs and help the hair dread much faster.

Dreads formed by backcombing look very much like dreads right after you do them, however they will tighten and smooth out a great deal as they mature. Using a good soap and wax is key to the development of the dreads. Well maintained dreads can reach maturity in as little as 3 to 4 months! The hair continues to dread as it grows in some cases by itself but in most cases it will need a little help. You can wear a rubberband on the root of stubborn dreads to help them lock up. Rubbing the root of the dread clockwise against the scalp also helps.

Tips: Starting with clean, residue free hair makes the process go much faster. Any residue in the hair tends to help the hair slip out of knots as you backcomb. Also be sure that the hair is completely dry when you back comb it.

Everything is there. I read a few years ago that the back-combing is best of all the techniques that do not require chemical treatment (what the hairdresser will do) and is suitable even for non-kinky hair. It takes a lot of patience, so your kid might not be able to put up with it if he's too young. It also needs maintenance, so I gave up on getting myself dreadlocks, because I would need to visit the hairdresser so often for maintenance (none of my friends were interested in helping me).

Good luck!

I have dreads and I had to cut my hair down to about an inch. Its usually easier to start them real short . Idk , I think it takes longer to lock when its that long.

Why on earth would you want your son to have them?! shouldn't his hair be his decision?!

but just don't wash his hair, or go to the hairdressers in the closest city near you, chances are they can do it better then a small town hairdresser.

Well I have been having dreads for about 2 yrs. now and I can tell you that locking is a process. The best way to start them would be finger twisting for neat tight locks.First wash his hair and do not comb afterwards. You can apply some holding gel that hardens to the base. Divide his hair into squares of the desired size then twist his hair clockwise of the section. After twisting for a while the hair should turn into a fine coil.Clamp the coil down with an all purpose clip at the base to make sure it stays tight.Do this all over his head and let his hair air dry. After the 1st 2 months rinse his hair. His hair wont be completly locked but the knot will form for the basic structure of them.Make sure you wash his hair clean. Then retwist each loc back down counterclockwise and clamp them down. This time only use water to twist down.oil his hair. These twisted down form of dreads are called locs and are really good for black corporate america.Do this every 2 to 4 weeks.I highly reccomend this style if your son is african american but if he is caucasion, thats a different story. After the first 3 to 6 months his hair should enter the teenage stage of locking, but after 1 yr to 4 yrs, his hair will be neat and pretty.you can also cut loose strand to make his hair look neater.Heres a website that offers styling tips
