This can depend on your hair texture and how straight it is... if it's not too straight and heavy (basically like asian hair) you can put some styling creme or gel (whatever you normally use) on your wet hair after you have come out of the shower and braid it. Let it stay for a couple of hours or more, when you open your hair the waves are soft and natural looking.

Now if you have the thick straight hair then basically you blow dry after coming out of the shower and you can use a curling iron.

You can try a product called Garnier Fructis STYLE -Surf Hair you spray it in your hair and blow-dry it while you twisting and scrunching the hair.If you do it at night and put it up in like a messy bun and take it out in the morning it works really well=)

Even with pretty straight hair the curl activators work enough to give a wavy curl. Wash your hair and towel dry, spray a curl activator in it and let dry 80%, scrunching your hair with fingers off and on. Then blow dry hair upside down with diffuser on the end of bloy dryer (to keep the frizzies down) for volume. I tried John Frieda from Wal-mart. This product is lousy. It makes your hair so stiff you can't even run your fingers through it. Get one from a hair salon. They are kind of expensive (around $16 for a bottle but well worth it since you only use a little bit. Make sure you work it through your hair to the ends.
